Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg
A mixture of anecdotes from Goldberg's writing and teaching life and exercises (some are more like games) with words. Written in very short chapters, this is ideal to dip into to get the creative juices going.
Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande
Not another 'how-to-write' book, this is more 'how-to-be-a-writer, with discussion of the habits and choices we have in life and how they affect our ability to be a writer. First published in the thirties, it's as relevant today as then, but increasingly difficult to get hold of.
On Writing by Stephen King
Some would view the master of horror as an unlikely source for advice but King is also a master of his craft and you could do far worse than learn from him. Subtitled 'A Memoir', it is just that and a good read, interspersed with insightful musings and exercises connected to the writing process.

New Novelist software
No software can write your novel for you but New Novelist is a great help with planning. Fully customisable, the templates provided are a good starting point to outline plot and character development and the self-contained word processor means you can easily refer back to your notes as you write.
